The atmosphere of the hostel was pretty cool, but we all felt far too superior to the other tourists there to really enjoy it. It just didn’t compare to our previous life as ‘homeowners’ at the upmarket end of the same street. There were advantages, though: there was electric light at night, warm showers and coin-operated clothes washers and driers. There was also a payphone and a bar with espresso coffee and brioche.

Because the hostel had a policy of kicking boarders out onto the street at nine in the morning and because the morning air was so bitterly cold, we were galvanised into action. We soon had two second-hand Peugeot 504s (purchased via newspaper classifieds and some guidance from the tarot) and the bare essentials to leave Paris. ‘Spain…warm Spain…’ the others murmured, disregarding my advice that it wasn’t going to be any warmer than Paris. We squeezed into the new second-hand Pugs and, after protracted goodbyes, rolled south along Avenue du Général de Gaulle.
